Health Awareness program on Mental Health and Substance Abuse
Don Bosco Ashalayam in partnership with NHEC, WRWAB and Yamuna Clinic organised Health Awareness Programme on Mental health and substance abuse at 282, Hastal, New Delhi, for the Burmese community.

The programme was attended by 46 people, out of which 32 are females and 14 are males. The health session was facilitated by Dr. Tint Swe from Yamuna Clinic. The team who came with Dr. Tint Swe are:
Ms. Nu Boih (a) Vung Suan Man, HCL/07C1039, Traditional Birth Attendant, First Aid Worker, Ms. Cing Buah (a) Hau Lam Cing, HCL/07C1051,Traditional Birth Attendant and First Aid Worker, Mr. Ro Kung, 04IND360, Community Health Worker, Ms. Ning Khen Cing (a) Cing Lek, Under training, Ma Aye Thazin Wai, First Aid Worker, Ko Khin Maung Latt, Video journalist.

The facilitator conducted the session with power point presentation. He started the session by giving example of some imminent artist like Vincent van Gogh, who suffered from mental illness. Mental illness is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.

Mental disorder was explained under the following heads:
• Adjustment disorder
• Childhood Disorder
• Eating Disorder
• Mood Disorder
• Cognitive Disorders (Delirium, Dementia, Amnestic Disorders)
• Personality Disorders
• Schizophrenic and other Psychotic Disorders
• Substance-Related Disorders

Time was given for queries. After which, medical care was extended to 32 patients. Common diseases treated are Respiratory tract infection, Gastric problems and Antenatal care.

Key Observations:
Medical Check up is very beneficial for them. This becomes an additional reason for them to come to the program.
Respiratory tract infection and gastric problem are common among the community. Even in the previous health awareness program these were the common diseases treated.
Our partner organisations are very supportive and make the program beneficial.
